Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture- Amanda Ewen

Image and pilgrimage in Christian Culture- Classification of Pilgrimages

There are four main types of pilgrimages.  The first type is called prototypical pilgrimages.  There are pilgrimages on the authority of documentary or widespread traditional evidence.  Founders of a historical religion established these types of pilgrimage but they can sometimes be founded on ancient religious sites.  The second type bear evident traces of syncretism with older religious beliefs and symbols.  The last two types are within the Christian tradition.  The third type is medieval pilgrimages.  This pilgrimage is oriented on popular and literary traditions of the Christian world.  The final type is highly devotional tone and the fervent personal piety of their adherents.  I would like to have known if any of these pilgrimages is better then the others? I would have liked to have had examples of each or a little more information on each.
