Outside Reading: Warrior Hike
While working on my end of the year paper, I came across this program called "Warrior Hike". This program allows war veterans to 'walk off the war' and I think this is a very cool activity. In 1948, Earl Shaffer told one of his friends the he was going to walk off the the war in hopes to work out the sounds, sights, and unfortunate losses experienced in World War II. About 4 months later, Shaffer became the first person to travel the entire length of the AT, starting in Georgia and ending in Maine. The Warrior Hike has partnered with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the Continental Divide Trail Coalition, and the Pacific Crest Trail Association to start this awesome program which is specifically designed to support combat veterans who are making the transition from service back to everyday civilian life.
