Landscapes of the Sacred - CP

In the book Landscapes of the Sacred, Lane gives the reader four axioms in which sacred place is perceived. The first axiom is "sacred place is not chosen, it chooses". This means that one cannot simply select a place and claim it as sacred, a place becomes sacred on it's own. The second axiom is "sacred place is an ordinary place, made extraordinary". This means that a normal, everyday place can become sacred through experiences and encounters that take place. The third axiom is "sacred place can be tread upon without being entered". This means that people can be in a sacred place without knowing, most sacred places are only sacred to one or few people. Because it is a sacred place to me doesn't mean that it will be sacred to you. I believe this axiom answers a big question when dealing with sacred place. The fourth and final axiom is "the impulse of sacred place is both centripetal and centrifugal, local and universal". This means that sacred place draws you close but also pushes you away. One typically goes to their sacred place for peace, comfort, reflection, etc. but if he/she stays in that place for a long period of time, the place will begin to push you away. One could also interpret this final axiom as meaning sacred place is in your mind as well as around you. People can relive sacred encounters or experiences in their thoughts, but never go to that specific place again.
