Essay 13: Axioms
(Landscapes of the Sacred)
1)
The Sacred place is not chosen, it chooses
2)
The Sacred Place is an ordinary place ritually
made extraordinary
3)
The Sacred Place can be tread upon without being
entered
4)
The impulse of the Sacred Place is both
centripetal and centrifugal, local and universal.
MCM 101 is a
sacred place to me. My first semester at CNU I had no connection to the room,
yet after joining Sigma Phi Epsilon it developed a sense of sacredness to me.
Every Sunday, we had chapter there. I did not say upon coming across MCM 101
that it would become sacred to me, based upon my interactions it was chosen and
I had no control over it. The repetition of meeting every week, it now holds
hundreds of memories associated with my experience with Sigma Phi Epsilon and
thus it became sacred. MCM101 can also be tread upon and is tread upon without
being entered every day of the week by many students every day. MCM represents
a endearing experience where I have argued, laughed, been confused, and learned
many things. I have been the educated and I have been the educator in that room
and the idea that a place can be sentimental to someone is a universal idea
that is not limit to MCM101 but can be experienced there. The events that take
place there take place in many buildings in Sig Ep chapters across the nation
making it local and universal.
