Madison Setness- Image and Pilgrimage

There are three different types of Communitas. The first type being spontaneous which defied deliberate cognitive and volitional construction. The second type of communitas is normative communitas: the attempt to capture and preserve spontaneous communitas in a system of ethical precepts and legal rules.  The third type of communitas is ideological communitas, the formation of remembered attributes of the communitas experience in the from of a Utopian blueprint for the reform of society. Most communitas on the Appalachian Trial would be considered spontaneous.
