Kathleen Layman: Student's Choice pt 3

PCT vs AT

The Pacific Crest Trail is something I have recently learned about in the last few weeks of school- -that's right, I had never heard of this trail before much less was unaware of this mountain range/chain. Living in Virginia, I was obviously familiar with the Appalachian Trail and am partial to it because I believe Virginia is the best state.

The PCT and the AT provide different types of challenges. The PCT requires miles of desert followed by miles of mountains, very jagged mountains at that. The AT is a lot of wooded mountainous areas but also a few flat, farm-like areas. Depending on the individual, the AT might be the better choice or the PCT may be the winner. Personally, I would go for the AT first and then proceed to the PCT if I enjoyed the hiking enough.

My ignorance of the PCT makes me wonder: how many on the west coast are ignorant of the AT?!
