Phenomenology of Prayer- Catherine Buttner

Passion and Prayer

The author notes that the purpose of prayer is to become what we pray through passionate prayer, which is known as true prayer.  Prayer is all about the incoming and outgoing passion (i.e. a passionate exchange between God and the one who prays).  When people cry when they pray, such as when they ask God difficult questions such as "why have you deserted me?" or "why did you let this happen to me?" that crying is an expression of passion.  Grief is another type of passion which can lead to petitionary prayer.  The author notes that passionate grief experienced during prayer can lead to "passionate reinvestment in the world".  An example of this might be when people are asking God to change their circumstances, and they realize that they have the power to produce changes in their lives.  This is what the author means when he refers to "passionate reinvestment in the world".  Additionally, prayer can be an experience that gives people a greater sense of reality.
