Shannon Rose: Nature 2

Water the odds 12/6/2013

I went off trail today; it was glorious. I felt like SUCH a rebel, trekking through the prickly brush, stumbling over rotted branches, collecting spider webs with my face, I was the epitome of grace out there. I found a mossy spot to sit and caught my breath for a minute. As my heart rate regulated, I looked out onto the water and just stared in awe. How could anyone believe that all this happened on accident? The water itself is simply remarkable when you think about it. Water is made up of two hydrogen and one oxygen. Both elements alone are super light gasses at room temperature, yet they combine to form the strongest bond possible between atoms. And those tiny, tightly bonded atoms collect together in a liquid that is transparent and flows so interestingly-the formation of droplets to the downpour of waterfalls, the rings formed by a leave falling upon the water to the crash formed when a wave hits the shore. The peculiar microscopic beauty and diversity of snowflakes in a blizzard and the voluptuous enormity of  cumulonimbus clouds before a storm. And the fact that life as we know it revolves around this weird little substance. Water may be God’s way of showing off his crazy power and creativity in the most humble way.
