Kathleen Layman: Natural Setting pt 2

The oceanfront in Virginia Beach is nice, but it's a drive that I'm not willing to make all that often. It is only 35 minutes from my house but why go there when I could go to East Beach- a nicer, less populated, and much closer beach? East Beach is one of my favorite places to go. During fall break, there was a beautiful day that was about 82° and I convinced my best friend to go with me and enjoy a quiet day without any homework.

She ended up bringing a book but fell asleep reading it. I laid there quietly, basking in the sun and the waves quietly crashing on the shore. After learning about place and coming to understand what it means to really be somewhere- not just physically but also mentally, emotionally, and spiritually- I came to appreciate that location so much more.

Being the incredibly quiet beach it already is it became much easier to appreciate the nature, the sky, the ocean, and also the handful of people scattered along the beach. Thinking back to a few friends who have been baptized in the water there, I wondered what other sacred things have happened: weddings? conversions? more baptisms? The list could go on. The location of the beach did not force these things to happen but were simply the location in which the places occurred.
