Mitchell Genovese Landscapes of the Sacred 1

The axioms of sacred place from the text Landscapes of the Sacred were very interesting concepts.  The first was that the sacred place it not chosen but instead it chooses.  At first I thought that this was not true but when you go back and look at places that are now sacred, people were not searching for them, they just ended up being found by them.  It reminded me of some of the places I have stumbled upon and found to be really relaxing and spiritual areas.  It is almost as though sacred places call out to those who need them to be stumbled upon.  This first axiom plays well with the second that is the sacred place is an ordinary place made extraordinary.  Sacred areas always seem to be pretty normal, naturally occurring areas.  If they had not been made into a sacred area then you could walk right through one and never even consider it sacred.  It is pretty neat to think about how something like a cave or a hilltop that is so normal in the world can become something held in high respect and godliness.
