Mitchell Genovese Phenomenology of Prayer 2

Kenosis is intertwined with my earlier post of the decentered self.  In the Phenomenology of Prayer Kenosis was related to a prayer.  In order to become entirely connective and receptive to gods will one must empty the self of their own will.  This has been lost as people now pray to god as they would ask a friend for help.  In order to become untrapped from the grips of societal thinking people have to be decentered and open to god completely.  This reading just stuck me because I always was under the impression that as long as you prayed to god and was in communication with him you could pray any way you want.  That is still true but what I did not think about is how society has turned prayer into an exchange relationship.  We ask god for things and promises things in return.  It is pretty silly when you think about it, what does god need from us?  He doesn’t need anything but he wants us to be open and receptive of him without ourselves getting in the way.
