Image and Pilgrimage- Catherine Buttner

Introduction- Pilgrimage as a Liminoid Phenomenon

The author indicates that everyone who goes through a rite of passage passes through the three phases of separation, limen or margin, and aggregation.  Separation is when the individual becomes detached from their previous social or cultural status.  The liminal phase is when the person becomes uncertain and ambiguous. This is the middle phase and it is characterized by being "in between" stages.  Aggregation is the end of the transition and it is when the person returns to their normal life.
