Trail Magic
I was confused as to what this was at first. The hiker's in the films kept mentioning it yet no one defined it. After enough mentions with examples I began to pick out my own definition: a random act of kindness provided by locals that have a passion to encourage hikers as they make an arduous journey.
Trail magic is rarely expected but is always appreciated by all. One day when I'm old, gray haired, and retired I want to live in the mountains and be a sweet old lady with tacky sweaters that just bakes cookies and other delicious things for hikers and invite them into my home. My parents have always invited international students into our home for the holidays and this has really made an impact on who I am and how I see others.
In my ENG 223 class, we have learned a lot about Walt Whitman's idea of urban/national affection-- the idea of loving those around you without having to know their stories, but simply because they are people too. This is something I wish to have more of. It is very easy to be judgmental of people around me, but why is it so hard to love? We were created for love yet our sinful nature keeps us from that. Trail Magic changes that, Trail Magic denies judgment and encourages a flow of love and appreciation of each individual.
