Image and Pilgrimage- Catherine Buttner

Chapter 2- Mexican Pilgrimages

Mexico was basically the birthplace of pilgrimage.  Millions of Mexican Catholics journey to religious shrines every year.  It is imperative to study these Mexican pilgrimages to achieve a broader understanding of pilgrimage in general.  In Mexico, there are certain characteristics that a shrine would have to have in order to become an official pilgrimage destination.  Many of the shrines depict apparitions or the Virgin Mary or other Catholic saints.  Some of the shrines are said to have miraculous properties and some of them contain objects that belonged to saints or martyrs.  This is why the Mexican pilgrimages are integral to the study of pilgrimage.
