Phenomenology of Prayer- Katie Randazzo

Recently, I have been drawn to hymns and not contemporary worship music in my personal time of worship. I have found that many contemporary worship songs are about the worship itself, not about God. I think that this distracts me from the true meaning of worship- to adore God. Many hymns are solely about God and our relation to him. This reminds me of the idea of “disinterested delight” not exoteric praise. In Phenomenology of Prayer, we learn that this is “sucking up,” admiring other humans rather than adoring God. When a worship song is about the actual state of worship, not the Creator, I think it defeats the purpose of worship. I get pretty distracted at showy music during worship and constantly get distracted from the true meaning of worship, to praise God. Later in the book, we read about humble adoration, that this causes de-centering of self to adore God, not ourselves. To me, hymns help me decenter myself and  truly look at the characteristic of God. Do you have feelings of this disinterested delight in your own personal time of worship?
