In the appendix of Victor Turner and
Edith Turner’s book “Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture,” the word
symbol is described from a religious perspective. It says it is “distinguished from a sign by
both the multiplicity of its meanings and the nature of its signification (pg.
245).”
An
example can be the cross that Jesus was crucified on. People where crosses around their necks and
when someone sees that symbol they know it is distinct from anything else. It does have a “religious perspective,” it is
representing where Jesus died and what he did to save his people. He paid the price for everyone’s sins. If you are hiking on the Appalachian Trail
and you see a cross somewhere or maybe someone has made one out of some sticks,
the hikers know what that is and what it represents. It is set apart from any other symbol due to
its significance.
