Colin Huber: Image and Pil. In Chirst. Culture

"The action [of ritual of affliction] is normally expected to render the patient whole and healthy..."

"A pilgram, on the other hand is not supposed to expect any corporeal remedy."

Turner is addressing the difference here between two form of ritual.  He says that tribal affliction rituals are usually done with expectations of the ritual working tangibly within their world.  This is the magic approach to spirituality.  Magic, he says, is causative and the user seeks power from the ritual.  A pilgrim, according to Turner, recognizes any miraculous healing that may occur during their experience as the grace of God.  The pilgrim is on a journey to access liminal space, in which, to commune in with God not demand his presence in their direct material life.  Magic worshipers seek to control and power from their rituals and practices.  Pilgrims are much more focused of their true spirituality, as compared to magic worshipers.
