John Tyler - Outside Reading - God's Voice

“The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘speak, for your servant is listening’” (1 Samuel 3:10)

Samuel was young and inexperienced when he heard the voice of God.  It says that Samuel did not yet know the Lord and that is why he couldn’t tell who was calling him.

God, who is always speaking, desires to reveal Himself to us, however, we must be tuned into God in order to hear what he is saying to us.  Just as a radio hisses when it is not set on the right frequency, so it is with us when we are not sending the right spiritual frequencies.  Sacred communication can happen audibly, however, it is often times within the heart.  This is why many people claim that they can never hear God or feel Him.  From this passage, we see how God speaks. It is bold and persistent.  In the moment when God is heard, there must be a response.  God desires dialogues and not monologues.  Samuel realized who was speaking to him and modeled this after being told by Eli what to do.  He was tuned into God's voice.
