Rachel Popp- "Landscapes of the Sacred" #2

I found it very interesting that the first chapter of Landscapes of the Sacred begins with the sentence, “Above all else, sacred place is ‘storied place.’” This statement and the following sentences often suggest that our ancestors chose the sacred places for their own reasons. However, one of the axioms of a sacred place states that a sacred place is not chosen, it chooses itself. Furthermore, there aren’t always any records of these ancestors that are going around picking out sacred places. And each of these holy places is often surrounded by unprovable tails of saints and miracles. I think the stories only further prove that sacred places just sort of come about on their own, which is why I find the fact that there are so many stories and such so interesting. Who made these up to begin with? Where did the legends start? Depending on the age of the sacred site and how good the records of the place are, we might never know how these places came about.
