Ryan Gibson (natural settings appalachian trail)
Over one weekend me and several other members of the hiking club went on a two day hike on the Appalachian trail near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. I had not been back on the trail since the summer semester's two week hike, and was really exited to get back. Unlike a long through hike, a two day hike is much easier requiring a lot less equipment and commitment of time. Even though this trip was more like a vacation then a pilgrimage many of the benefits provided by the trail were still able to be acquired. First and most importantly was the actually hiking of the trail. When hiking the A.T. I am able to become captivated by the beautiful terrain while also getting a nice exercise. The hike also provided a nice opportunity to enter into the flow experience which like meditation allows for me to clear my mind and truly relax. Even though this particular trip was so short the advantages of the separation from the regular was much needed. I find that while in nature my mind tends to focus on things I otherwise would completely ignore, like the beautiful songs of the birds or each how each tree has its own unique look and disposition, much like each human. Finally, the last thing that the Appalachian Trail has never failed to provide for me is the opportunity to really get to bond with others on the trail. After a long days hike there is nothing more pleasurable then to sit by a bonfire, eat some food, and share storied and adventures with your campmates.
