This book, on silence and solitude, related much to this
class. The second Chapter dives into solitude and how often in times of
necessary solitude, thoughts and feelings are brought up that are often not
wanted. Because we often do not give ourselves time to deal with these negative
thoughts in our day-to-day lives, as soon as we are alone they are coming up.
This can be a scary thought of solitude for some individuals, and Nouwen
remarks often about how the thought of this part of solitude often sends
individuals away from solitude. Nouwen states that individuals need this
solitude to be able to truly be active members of society, namely ministry.
Thinking about my own time in solitude, the thought of negative thoughts when I
desire positive life-giving thoughts is threatening. Do you think that there is
a discipline before going out into solitude to help with this element of
negativity?
