Discipline of Walking- Katie Randazzo

After our discussion in class about spiritual disciplines such as walking, I decided to test it our for myself. For a few mornings a week, I would wake up extra early to walk. I left my cell phone at home, in a sense to shake off the village, and would set out for a walk in hopes to experience God in a new way. I paid close attention to the rhythm of walking. To the footsteps, the breathing, the trot in the way I walked. I tried to focus on something that would clear my mind from any outside thinking. Once my mind was cleared, I would pray that I could focus on God. After that, every thought that would come into my  mind- I would spend time praying about that thought or person. I also used this time to speak scripture out loud, in tune with my step, to try to de-center myself in humble adoration of who God has proclaimed himself to be. I walked until I had to get ready for class. The days spent after a morning spiritual walk I found myself more in tune with God. I found myself less anxious and more reliable on God’s power. I think that walking outside, especially in the simplicity of the morning, is a great spiritual discipline. I loved the way that the sun would reach through the clouds and warm up my face as if God was saying “I am glad you are here.”
