I heard a really amazing slam poem the other day.
Surprisingly, I heard about the poem because a group of students in my roommate’s
dance class danced to it and my roommate found it very offensive. Upon
listening to it, I could see why she might find the poem offensive but I
actually really liked the poem. It is called My God by Rudy Francisco and he
basically talks about his God verses who people perceive their God to be. He
says things like, “I bet your God is an alcoholic who sees the bottom of a shot
glass more than his own children!” This might be offensive if you miss the
overall message that the poet goes over near the end of the poem. He basically
says that people have begun to worship shadows of themselves instead of God. In
essence, he claims that people have begun to mold God into what they want him
to be and made him okay with what they want to do whether it be sex, drugs,
violence, etc. What a powerful message!
