Rachel Popp- Outside Reading #1

My best friend recently introduced me to a song called My Life Be Like by Gritz. I was surprised when she claimed the song was extremely religious but I obviously had had trouble hearing all of the words while first listening to it. So I just went back to read the lyrics and I have to say that I love the song even more now than I did before. The entire song is basically a prayer in many ways. Although there is very little of the praise that is a requirement of prayer, there are a few lines such as, “My heartfelt desire be more like you,” covertly suggesting this theme. There is a lot of thanksgiving as the artist often thanks God for the things he does as well as Christ for the sacrifice he made when he gave his life on the cross. He petitions for himself with statements like, “Lord if you see me, please come my way,” and just asking for his help and guidance throughout the lyrics. “Sometimes I fall, I slip,” the singer admits which I personally consider a confession, another aspect of prayer. The only characteristic of prayer that I did not find in the song lyrics was intercession for others, since the artist focused mainly on God and himself in the song.
