Cherith C- Student's choice #1
I recently read an article by Kenneth Burke on "Terministic Screens". A terministic screen provides a framework for you to see the world. The world is made up of language and symbols because man is a symbol-using animal. Our language and symbols define us as much as we define them in the symbolic world that we live. The symbolic world is an example of a terministic screen through which we view the non-symbolic world. We do not interact with the the non-symbolic world directly, therefore our symbol-filled terministic screen distorts our view of the non-symbolic world. Our world is filled with symbols that affect our spiritual world as well. The way we determine what those symbols mean, or the types of definitions that we place on those symbols, will define our connection with our spiritual world. How can we tell which terministic screens are good? What kind of terministic screens are preserving?
