Drew Carpenter - Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture 2
When I was younger I wore a cross necklace. The reason I wore it was not to feel closer to God (though I told myself this) but as a fashion statement. So much of what the average human does in his faith life relies upon idols or false attachments to better the self. In modern religion today, some would say we are extremely selfish. As people we strive to show off ourselves when we should be giving the glory to God. When Turner discusses idols in his book, he reinforces that though people had them in their religions thousands of years ago, they are not for the glory of God. I no longer wear the cross necklace because of what it did to me. It was not beneficial to my faith life, but degrading.
