Kathleen Layman: Image and Pilgrimage pt 1

I like relaxing. Whether that involved watching Netlfix, laying on the beach, or taking a nap,  I enjoy being at rest and at peace. When I began to hear what RSTD 236 was really about once I sat in the classroom, I was baffled: People want to hike and put themselves through an arduous journey just to say they did?! They carry a huge back pack, get tons of blisters, go through awful weather and they still want to do it even more after they finish their first hike?!

I still have trouble understanding what makes people want to do this, but I can respect those that attempt and have even more respect for those that complete hikes like the AT or PCT. "The point of [pilgrimage] is to get out, go forth, to a far holy place approved by all" (Turner and Turner 7). The Turners write about pilgrimages in a way that really woke me up to this foreign concept. It is not for an extrinsic reason that people complete these hikes but rather for the intrinsic value and the lessons they learn while on the hike.
