Kathleen Layman: Image and Pilgrimage pt 2

Photograph by author, taken in 2011.

In the top right corner of this photo, is a structure resembling that of a cross. At the bottom of this mountain (which is actually the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua!) that structure definitely looked like a normal cross to the naked eye. As we hiked up the trail we continued to see the cross as our break, as our destination, or rather, as our refuge. As we began the final ascent after taking numerous photos of the main vent/throat of the volcano, we slowly began to see it was still a cross, but different from what we expected.

What the cross really looks like. Photo obtained from google.

According to Nicaraguan history, the Catholics thought this location was special, but in a negative way. They believed this volcano was a gate to Hell so they erected a cross to exorcise the area/spirits. The Catholics had a sense of the meaning of the land just by looking at it. However, adding the cross really brought a deeper meaning to it for me and many others that have visited.
