Martha: Image and Pilgrimage

The idea of liminality is  an interesting one. One of the strong ideas within this book is the idea of going out and coming back a different person. Native Americans thought of this as a dream quest, and in some ways youth now use college this way, although college isn’t necessarily a spiritual practice for most students. Liminality talks about the transition and the potential that is attached to it. Liminality covers so much, potential is such a strong word. Potential is thought by some to be limitless, and even those who don’t believe that believe that the potential of a person is greater than what they are or appear to be. Transition is also a strong word, there are people who decide who they are and never change because of rigidness, or more commonly, fear of going off into the unknown. They don’t understand where else they can go and so they stay where they are, and like those dumb commercials, something that is resting, stays resting. People get in ruts and then they wake up at sixty one day and realize that they no longer remember how to move.
