In Image and Pilgrimage, the
aggregation phase of rites of passages was very interesting to me. Here, the
pilgrim is back into the world in which they have previously come from before
their pilgrimage, submerged in their culture. I think of how much a pilgrim
changes on a pilgrimage, that they have undergone so much spiritual, physical,
and emotional change. All this change is extremely hard when reentering a space
in which they were formerly not changed. Connecting that to the Appalachian
trail movie we watched in class, I thought about the aggregation phase every
time the individuals reached a trail town. Personally, I have spent long
periods of time in the wilderness and even going into town for a break or a
meal causes stress and anxiety after being out of the mainstream for a long
time. When entering the marketplace after being in the wilderness for a while,
how would you deal with any stress from the aggregation phase? Do you think that
it would be a problem for you to adapt after aggregation phase or would you be
able to cope?
