The Shack
This summer I began reading a novel called The Shack
by William P. Young. The book is about a man named Mac. He has been distant
from God for some time and after his daughter is kidnapped and killed he takes an
unexpected spiritual journey to find some answers. The book reminds me of all that
we have been learning in this course.
Thus far in the novel he has journeyed throughout the
wilderness in search of the shack in which his daughter’s blood-stained dress
was found. Upon reaching the shack he encounters God, the Holy Spirit, and
Jesus. Mac has left all the structure he has known to search for the holy.
Sacred place chose him and he is available to encounter spirituality. He’s
crossed the liminal phase and is well on his way to finding all the answers he’s
looking for. He prays with a decentered self. And he’s definitely not a tourist
but a full blown pilgrim searching for something greater than magic. This book
puts the class into perspective for me. Though I am far from done I can definitely
see the correlations between class and the book. As I continue reading I will definitely
be looking for more ways in which sacred journey, sacred place and sacred communication
play out.
