In
Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, we discussed the meaning of liminality. Liminal comes from the Latin word for threshold, meaning "in between". It is a part of the rites of passage involved in pilgrimage. This can occur after a pilgrim "shakes off the village". The village has the marketplace mentality, meaning it is fast paced and focused on "buying and selling". The liminal represents a threshold of leaving the known and heading for the unknown.
