Cherith C- Outside Reading
For my rhetoric course, I had an outside reading assignment, Martin Luther King Jr. and the Rhetoric of Freedom. This book covered a lot of areas that we discussed in class. In class we touched on the Exodus, and how that can be related to the pilgrimage that hikers experience on various trails like the Appalachian Trail. The actual act of hiking can be seen as a spiritual ritual. The retelling of the Exodus brought upon a similar spiritual ritual when African Americans marched in protest. The theme of movement is very powerful. Hikers on a pilgrimage, much like the Israelites in the Exodus were, allowing them to perform an exegesis of their life. The Exodus is transcendent because it allows the hikers/pilgrims to identify with the Israelites. Instead of being a relatable story, it becomes a relatabe experience.
