Eric Sutton-Phenomenology of Prayer

In the introduction, the authors acknowledge that prayer is not only about connecting with the divine, but also about us.  I think that is something that is often forgotten, that prayer is twofold.  I've heard many prayers throughout my life and many of them will focus on one of the two.  Either the person praying will concentrate too much on worshiping God or they will concentrate too much on their own needs.  Prayer is a balancing act of God and man, communicating together.  It’s up to the individual whether or not to balance them well.  Communication is a two part process.  Prayer, at its root, is communication between the divine and man.  It requires something from both parties.  It should not lack one or the other because that can take away from the potential meaning of the prayer and the results that might come from it.
