Harley Guenther- "The Mountain That Was God"- Landscapes of the Sacred #2
For people like to learn the history of the area that they are climbing, Mount Rainier in the Puget Sound of Washington, USA has a thick and rich history. Mount Rainier was named after an admiral in the British Royal Navy. The mountain was named by a another British person, this time a navigator,George Vancouver. But unknown to Mr. Vancouver, the Mountain already had a name. This mountain had been around for thousands of years. It had previously acquired the name Mount Tahoma from the Pacific Northwest Native Americans. The name Mount Tahoma means "the mountain that was God". I am sure that many landmarks and cites have the same historical values that nobody knows about.
