John Tyler - Student's Choice - Uses of Prayer

“At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him” (Mark 1:12-13)

Prayer can be used as a way to draw close to God and defense tactic.  When Jesus was led into the wilderness, he was tempted and fasted for 40 days.  With no food or water and completely removed from society, Jesus was alone and inevitably in the place of prayer.  The Devil tempted Jesus three times, however, in each response, Jesus used Scripture to combat the enemy’s deceptive schemes. It is then, through a firm understanding of Scripture that we learn to pray effectively and with purpose.  Prayer draws us closer to God and further away from darkness.  Jesus modeled how we should pray when He prayed in front of the disciples and in the quiet places.  It is important to consider how Jesus, the Son of God, prayed.  This should spur us on to follow in His footsteps.
