Essay 3: Raising
the bar (My choosing)
The
fraternity I belong to decided a year ago to place me in charge of the
development process, which includes new member education, accountability,
mentorship, and many other facets dealing with each individual’s development. I
spent my first semester meeting the general requirements of the job but not
exceeding in it. It was not until I really began to dig deep into the role and
purpose of my position that I realized that our processes were not in line with
what they were supposed to be and possibly was even a detriment to individuals
who were pursuing development individually. I realized that I needed to raise
the bar. I found myself wanting to solve every problem that was discovered in
our processes. I think that my generation has been surrounded by the expectation
for immediate response and has developed impatience about finding their
purpose. In my own experience, I had to learn that there was a higher purpose
outside of myself that my own individual purpose in the position was
contributing toward. I was the first to get the ball rolling towards
re-vampment of our processes even though I wanted to just fix them. I believe
taking time off from daily life to make a long distance hike will benefit very
many young people and will teach them lessons they didn’t have to grow up with,
mainly focused around patience.
