Logan Miller - War Paint (Nature)

Logan Miller
Essay 1: War Paint (Nature)

In Dr. Redick’s class, we were given the opportunity to have a class on the Nolan Trail. This was a class in which we were able to get away from the classroom and experience a more natural setting. Initially we did our best to be observant, noticing the different sounds and images that can move our spirits into a state of reverence. After the observation exercise Dr. Redick, as is typical in his classes, bestowed cool information concerning nature. One thing in particular that he did was he picked up a handful of berries (I do not remember which type, however I am sure that they were most likely not edible) and talked about the usefulness of them. They could be manufactured into a very potent dye. Dr. Redick then demonstrated the use by crushing the berries and wiping the juice on his face in a war paint like manner. In that moment, Dr. Redick taught a very important lesson without directly addressing it: much of what is around us can serve a purpose in our lives and we should be as resourceful as possible as to not waste the lives of the constituents of nature. I found this particularly relevant in my life, because I plan to serve in the military upon graduation, and, knowing that the country has been involved in conflict since 2001, being resourceful of what is around you can often be the difference of life and death in certain circumstances. In order to really grasp this though, I had to be distanced from the typical class and I had to become involved with nature to see its benefits in my life.
