I read a book review about the pilgrims who travelled on the
Mayflower and landed in Massachusetts.
The review made me think about the definition of a pilgrim. Pilgrims are travelers to a holy place, which
is a pretty obvious. We’ve talked about
them a lot in class, but there are a lot of different types of pilgrims. Christians, Jews, Muslims, and many other
religious people search for their holy places.
In the case of the Mayflower pilgrims, they sought a place of religious
refuge, where they could practice their religion in their own manner, but do
all pilgrims seek to find refuge? Do all
pilgrims seek to find something specific or do some just begin traveling in
hopes of finding something along the way?
I guess this takes us to the personalized experience of each
pilgrimage. Every pilgrim seeks and finds something different, which is
where the destination versus the traveling experience can come into play.
