Eric Sutton-Outside Reading: Matthew 4

When Jesus went into the wilderness, he was led by the spirit, but went to be tempted by the devil.  As I've thought about this passage, I noticed that even for Jesus the wilderness was used as a tool for finding internal power.  In his case, it was his power against the devil’s temptation.  In the case of others who go into the wilderness, the distance from society can offer new temptation and internal reflection from the challenges that may arise.  Whether these challenges come in the form of predators or inclement weather, the traveler must find an internal willingness to push through and survive.  It’s a push out of the comfort zone of many people, but the temptation to leave the experience is much like the devil.  We can’t always bow down to make things easier for ourselves, because when we dig deeper we find out our true ability.
